Meet the teacher: Amanda O'Dempsey's Journey from Student to Soulful Teacher

Let’s start with your story — what first brought you to Yoga or Pilates?

I started my movement journey with yoga, it was a place where no matter what was going on in my world around me, I could find a place within that felt like home. I fell in love with how the flow, challenges, movement and opening really anchored me within, and fostered a sense of self empowerment. From there, I moved into Pilates and Barre as a way to support my body physically, and have fun!

What inspired you to move from student to teacher?

I dipped my toes into the water of teaching movement, as the world shifted during COVID-19 lockdowns. At the time I was running a successful medical-retail franchise, but was looking for a shift, a challenge, and a ware to share with the world from a place of who I am.

Do you remember your first class teaching at Ritual?

My first class with Ritual was Barre! I had the best time with everyone, sweating, sculpting and getting fired up! We were all laughing and the energy in the room was ALIVE!

What’s something that keeps you grounded — especially on busy days or when energy is low?

Time in nature, especially by the ocean.

How do you find rhythm and balance between teaching, practicing, and life outside the studio?

It’s a constant juggling act, to keep that commitment to my own body and practice. And how I do that is constantly morphing and evolving, according to what’s going on in my life and also how I’m feeling. I move every day, with one rest day. I love to get my family involved! Sometimes I’ll do a class with my husband, other times it’s a family beach walk.

In what ways has teaching impacted you — both on and off the mat?

Every time I step on the mat to teach, I’m learning to. It’s constant evolving, anchoring and igniting.

What’s your favourite book or movie—and why?

Fools Gold, because I LOVE adventure! The ocean! And a little feel good Rom-Com!

Where do you turn for nourishment—whether it’s food, inspiration, knowledge, or self-care?

I turn to different things at different times. Sometimes it’s a bubble bath, time in nature, music that matches what I’m feeling/needing, and I always aim to nourish my body with quality food. Especially as I move a lot!
