Meet the teacher: Kate Dix on Strength, Stillness, and Sharing What She Loves
Name:
Kate Dix
Let’s start with your story — what first brought you to Yoga or Pilates?
I first came to Pilates through attending Barre classes , I love the intensity, control and strength it gave me while still feeling feminine in my body. I love that it is an embodied practice where you are encouraged to be present and concentrate on what is actually going on in your body, while connecting the breath and with movement
What inspired you to move from student to teacher?
With both yoga and Pilates, I was inspired to teach purely because I loved the classes so much that I just wanted to share them with others
Do you remember your first class teaching at Ritual?
After living abroad for the past few years, teaching at Ritual in the same room where I first completed my teacher training was like a full circle moment. I revisited the space as an experienced teacher and could reflect on how far I had come from the nervous student I was back then!
What does it feel like to guide a class from start to finish?
One thing I love about guiding yoga and pilates classes is how present I am for that period of time. I almost go into a flow state alongside the students, and I really enjoy creating a class that maintains a continuous flow from start to finish.
What’s something that keeps you grounded — especially on busy days or when energy is low?
I have become an early bird so to rise first in the house and enjoy a cup of coffee in my own quiet company sets me up for a calm and grounded day ahead
How do you find rhythm and balance between teaching, practicing, and life outside the studio?
As a teacher first starting out it is really easy to take on too many classes and experience burn out and loss of creativity. Teaching takes a lot of personal energy and over the years I have learned to find a good balance of weekly classes that suits me, depending on what else I have going on in life. I always prioritise attending studio classes with diffferent teachers, at least one per week, and practicing at home as well in smaller time increments. When life gets into a busy period, I try to schedule ahead of time when I can make it to the studio for a yoga or Pilates class and stick to it no matter what as I know it will fill my cup.
In what ways has teaching impacted you — both on and off the mat?
Teaching has changed my life! I could never have imagined myself being able to get up in front of a group of people and speak, let alone teach a whole class. But as the saying goes, practice makes progress and the more I share what I love in yoga and pilates, the more confident I become in myself and my abilities. I think teaching also helps to reinspire my own personal practice, through sharing it with others.
Is there a particular student interaction, class, or teaching moment that’s stayed with you?
I love to see other students start their own teaching journey, whether that’s through yoga or pilates. It’s inspiring to see others fall in love with the practices just like I did, enough to want to share it with the world.
What’s your favourite book or movie—and why?
Throne of Glass book series - I love getting lost in fiction fantasy.
Where do you turn for nourishment—whether it’s food, inspiration, knowledge, or self-care?
Spending time with good friends always lifts me up!
