Jess Stewart’s Healing Journey Through Pilates

Name

Jess Stewart

Let’s start with your story — what first brought you to Yoga or Pilates?

I was introduced to Pilates in the early 2000’s when Mari Windsor brought out her DVDs! From then I was hooked and started practicing in studios where I found my love for one of my favourite apparatus- the Reformer. It wasn’t until I suffered a low back injury where I truly experienced the healing power of Pilates and how beneficial it is for rehabbing an injury. My low back has never been better since diving deeper into my practice and it’s all thanks for Pilates.

What inspired you to move from student to teacher?

I worked full time in the corporate world for many years, an avid Pilates client coming into the studio 6 mornings per week. I loved it so much I wanted to learn more about the history and where Pilates came from. It was a sliding doors moment where I had the opportunity to take some time off work and dive deep into my teacher training. From there it ended up being my full time career and I truly found my calling!

Do you remember your first class teaching at Ritual?

Yes, I was teaching my first mat Pilates class at the Palm Beach studio, it was a full circle moment as I had practiced there as a client and then completed my teacher training in that very room! The vibes were high and I remember being so excited afterwards, you really do feel the energy from the students in the room. If they’re all having fun - I’m having a great time too.

What does it feel like to guide a class from start to finish?

It’s an experience like nothing else I’ve ever done in my career, a lot of focus is required to guide a class, we want our students to find their flow state and immerse themselves in the experience. But as teachers it’s important for us to find our flow state too. We go on a journey together and I love that we can all share the same energy during class

What’s something that keeps you grounded — especially on busy days or when energy is low?

Walking through Burleigh Hill or along the beach being in nature and out in the sun in general feeds my soul

How do you find rhythm and balance between teaching, practicing, and life outside the studio?

Teaching full time can be tricky to balance it all! I make a rule to always prioritise my practice/ movement each week. We need it to keep our inspiration sparked and fill our own cups. When I get time to go to a class I feel very grateful

In what ways has teaching impacted you — both on and off the mat?

I have the up most respect and appreciation for all teachers and their craft. As a client practicing, I used to think the teachers make it look so easy! I didn’t realise how much thought, energy and care goes on behind the scenes to create these classes. I love to immerse myself in a class now when I practice knowing how much time and entry the teachers used has taken to create these classes class. Off the Mat my stress levels have decreased significantly, as a corporate worker, I used to take my stress home with me. Now all I take home is positive vibes from my students which is a special feeling

Is there a particular student interaction, class, or teaching moment that’s stayed with you?

Seeing my students move and breathe in complete unison makes my heart sing! Everyone sharing energy and moving in together time to a class that has been carefully curated is a beautiful experience

What’s your favourite book or movie—and why?

Coda is my all time favourite movie, an incredible story brilliant acting and singing 🎵 anything with singing I love!

Where do you turn for nourishment—whether it’s food, inspiration, knowledge, or self-care?

When I need to recharge, I’ll take an infrared sauna at Riggs and then soak in the magnesium pools for self care. Also going to the beach with my puppies and spending time with my friends always x
