Meet the teacher: Emily Gardiner: A Journey from Student to Teacher

Let’s start with your story — what first brought you to Yoga or Pilates?

My love of movement. Between weight training and long distance running I was looking for something that helped me feel more centred and connected to my body during movement.

What inspired you to move from student to teacher?

Pilates became such an important part of my day, even if it was only 15 minutes, it would make me feel strong and centred. I wanted to learn more about the Pilates method and found myself naturally telling the people around me the things I learned and the benefits I felt. It felt like something I would enjoy to share with others.

Do you remember your first class teaching at Ritual?

My first class was a Mat Pilates class at palm beach, it was a full class early on a Friday morning. I remember being really nervous but as soon as I started the class all of the nerves melted away. Everyone at ritual is so kind and welcoming so it has always felt like a really safe place to teach. I left that class feeling so happy and proud after watching people work so hard and feel so strong in class.

What’s something that keeps you grounded — especially on busy days or when energy is low?

My morning coffee is essential

How do you find rhythm and balance between teaching, practicing, and life outside the studio?

I always make sure I find time for my own practice. I try to enjoy all of the little moments in life like walking the dogs, eating nourishing food and resting when I need to.

In what ways has teaching impacted you — both on and off the mat?

It has taught me to be exactly who I am and that way you will find your people.

What’s your favourite book or movie—and why?

“The art of racing in the rain” because dogs are everything. My husband and I watched this for the first time together on a plane home after being away from our dogs for a month. We were embarrassingly sobbing.

Where do you turn for nourishment—whether it’s food, inspiration, knowledge, or self-care?

Food, sunsets at the beach, a wine with a friend, time with my family and friends.
